Dinosaur Jr. and Buffalo Tom played House of Blues – 11/25

dino-1Western Mass legends Dinosaur Jr. and Boston’s Buffalo Tom joined forces for a post-Thanksgiving indie rock summit at the House of Blues last Friday.

Dinosaur Jr. continued their remarkable 2000s winning streak earlier this year with August’s Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not. The band’s fourth full-length since the original lineup’s 2005 reunion is another satisfying dose of what they do best, awash in fuzz, offhand hooks and virtuosic guitar solos. Their sole headlining Boston show promoting it this year was perhaps their biggest headlining gig ever in the city. With the support of fellow Massachusetts veterans Buffalo Tom, they had no trouble filling out the room.

Dino were in fine form for one of their typically career-spanning sets, which delivered plenty of favorites along with new tunes that sounded great (“I Walk For Miles” in particular cemented itself as a late-career gem). And regardless of how many times you’ve seen them, the contrast between J Mascis’ zen shredding and Lou Barlow’s percussively animated bass playing remains supremely entertaining.

Buffalo Tom’s lengthy supporting set was another crowd-pleaser, and really turned into something special when the band invited Mascis on stage for a cover of Galaxie 500’s “Tugboat.” Naturally, “I don’t wanna vote for your president” was the most emphasized lyric.
