Glacier and Girih played Bone Up Brewing – 12/30
A duo of New England post-metal greats played the penultimate night at Everett’s Bone Up Brewing taproom the night before New Year’s.
__________
Admittedly, I didn’t make it out to Bone Up as much as I wish I had. The Everett brewery opened up a taproom for its intriguing, unusual beers back in 2016, but their band collabs and gig bookings – which skewed towards the heavy end of the local scene – caught my attention only in recent years. I made it out to a few shows last summer and had a blast – which made the news that they’d be closing their doors at the end of the year a real downer. The cause of death? Landlord, naturally.
Rather than dwell on the negatives, though, the folks at Bone Up put together a pair of stacked year-end shows to make their last few days in Everett really count. I was already booked for New Year’s Eve (which boasted sets from Goblet, Viqueen, Karate Steve and Graviton), but did trek over for Saturday night’s earsplitting double feature of New Hampshire’s Girih and Boston’s Glacier – two towering beacons of instru-metal that go great together. Illuminated by the always-dazzling Dregs Liquid Light Show, the evening was a fitting half of a weekend-long sendoff, packed with friends and appreciators of Bone Up who are clearly going to miss it dearly. A bittersweet show for sure, but one I’m happy to have caught nonetheless.
