American Nightmare played Brighton Music Hall – 2/18

Reactivated Boston hardcore vets American Nightmare headlined a sold-out show at Brighton on Presidents’ Day weekend with support from Pissed Jeans, Protester and Spiritual Cramp.

So much for a quiet holiday weekend Sunday. Celebrating the release that Friday of their new self-titled LP – their first since 2003 – American Nightmare rolled into their hometown greeted by a fervent fanbase that was clearly ecstatic to have them back. The band’s blistering headlining set was all sparsely lit, streamlined chaos with vocalist (and Cold Cave mastermind) Wes Eisold dressed all in black at the helm.

Opening the night, rising San Francisco punks Spiritual Cramp had attitude and showmanship (and an enthusiastic tambourine player) to bolster their old-school sound, before D.C. straight edge crew Protester bludgeoned us with bursts of intently-focused rage. Allentown, PA’s Pissed Jeans rounded out the night with their bleakly humorous sludge-punk and the A+ stage banter of vocalist Matt Korvette. (To paraphrase: “The first thing I ask a sound guy when I get to a venue is, ‘You fuck with Municipal Waste?’ If the answers is ‘no’ I get in the van and drive the fuck home.”)

Photos from the whole evening (for which I was woefully unprepared without a flash by the time American Nightmare hit the stage) below.
