Thalia Zedek Band played Great Scott – 9/1
Boston mainstay Thalia Zedek released her latest LP, Eve, in August, and played a stacked record release show at Great Scott last Thursday with the likes of Minibeast, Black Helicopter and Positive Negative Man.
2016 has been a busy year for Zedek, who also has a debut record with post-punk trio E forthcoming and an ongoing gig performing with Eric Boomhower’s Dyr Faser project. I’ve spent some time with her and the bands this summer shooting promo portraits for Eve and E‘s respective releases, so it’s exciting to see everything come together now that autumn is (sort of) upon us.
Thursday’s show found Zedek and her band confidently working through the majority of their excellent new material with a diverse cast of supporting acts. Minibeast, side project of Mission of Burma’s Peter Prescott, whipped up some twisted experimental grooves while Black Helicopter (who I finally caught for the first time) hit an earsplitting noise-rock sweet spot. Positive Negative Man balanced things out on the slightly quieter side of the lineup, and won me over by segueing a Wire cover into The Stranglers’ “Something Better Change.”
