Earthless and Elder played The Sinclair – 3/16

San Diego shredders Earthless and Boston’s own Elder took over The Sinclair for a very loud Wednesday night.

Stoner/doom/heavy psych trio Elder took on opening duties, but being friends of their hosts and the only other band on the bill, they wound up playing a nearly hour-long set that made this feel more like a co-headlining affair. The band was tight and gale-force heavy as ever, delivering cuts from last year’s excellent Lore along with a new song.

Earthless followed up with a stunning set of their signature long-form improvisations, which combine the brain-melting fretwork of guitarist Isaiah Mitchell with the relentless groove of all-star drummer Mario Rubalcaba and bassist Mike Eginton. The band’s main set was a seamless hour of nonstop psychedelic firepower, somewhat astonishing in the physical endurance it required of the band and enough to leave the audience’s collective head spinning. Few bands do it quite like they do.
