Gig Watch – June 2024

Pallbearer at Royale, August 2015

Shows not to miss in and around Boston for the month of June.

__________

Warm weather, hot gigs. My picks for June below.

6/8 – Forever Lager @ Notch Brewing

Notch’s Brighton outpost hosts its inaugural Forever Lager fest, boasting a free, all-day outdoor lineup of largely local acts including Cape Crush, Grace Givertz, Oldsoul and Brooklyn-based headliner Pronoun. A ticketed portion will also get you access to the day’s touring beer lineup, with “25 brewers serving their finest lager beer from around the country.”

6/11 – Protomartyr @ Crystal Ballroom

Stormy Detroit post-punk outfit Protomartyr finally make it back to town in support of last year’s great Formal Growth in the Desert.

6/12 – Nourished By Time @ Cafe 939

Detroit’s rising alt-R&B auteur Nourished By Time stops at Berklee’s tiny Red Room – almost assuredly the smallest room he’ll ever be headlining in town.

6/15 – 15 Second Crush: A Benefit Show for Mark Erdody @ Deep Cuts

Mark Erdody – of veteran Boston bands Kudgel and Black Helicopter, among others – is currently undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and one of a few benefit gigs happening for him this month goes down at Deep Cuts on the 15th with Pile’s Rick Maguire, Landowner and more.

6/16 – Los Campesinos @ Paradise Rock Club

Welsh indie-pop cult favorites Los Campesinos make their way back stateside ahead of the July release of new LP All Hell.

6/17 – White Reaper / Spiritual Cramp @ Brighton Music Hall

A high-powered team-up in Allston pairs two of the great touring rock bands of the moment in garage-power-pop crew White Reaper and stylish punks Spiritual Cramp.

6/21 – Pallbearer @ The Sinclair

Modern doom greats Pallbearer returned last month with their first new music in four years, and they’ll be touring Mind Burns Alive with a Friday night stop at The Sinclair this month.

6/22 – Guided By Voices @ Royale

Indefatigable rockers GBV are on the road again, hitting Royale for what promises to be a marathon club date a week before the release of their 40th(!) LP.

6/22 – Ted Leo and the Pharmacists @ Paradise Rock Club

Tough choice for indie rockers this night, as Bob Pollard and co. are scheduled against Ted Leo and his Pharmacists celebrating 20 years of their classic Shake the Sheets across town at the ‘Dise.

6/23 – Mdou Moctar @ Paradise Rock Club

Psychedelic Tuareg shredder Mdou Moctar’s new record Funeral For Justice goes just as hard as its title suggests, and he and the band’s live show is a can’t-miss when they swing through Allston this month.

6/26 – Witch @ Brighton Music Hall

And speaking of psych hailing from Africa, Zamrock vets Witch will make a stop just up the road a few days later in support of Zango, their first new studio record in nearly four decades.

6/27 – Necrot @ Sonia

Bay Area death metal maniacs Necrot are back this year with the pulverizing Lifeless Birth, which they’ll bring to Sonia for one of their furious live sets late this month.

6/27 – Lip Critic @ O’Brien’s Pub

Across town, genre-hopping synth-punks Lip Critic take over O’Brien’s for a different brand of sonic madness.

6/28-30 – Solid Sound Festival @ MASS MoCA

And lastly, while it’s not Boston-based exactly, I have to give a shoutout to Wilco’s North Adams-based Solid Sound for the final weekend of the month. In addition to the traditional two headlining sets by its hosts, the festival boasts an especially strong undercard this year featuring Nick Lowe, Horse Lords, Soul Glo, Wednesday, Dry Cleaning and many more.
