Shows not to miss in and around Boston for the month of February.

__________

Another frozen February is on the horizon – and an extended leap-year one at that – which means more opportunities to get to the gig as we await the distant promise of Spring. Some picks for the month below.

2/3 – Lunar Ark / Tears from a Grieving Heart / Head in Hand @ Faces Brewing

An ultra-heavy bill of Boston’s finest doom creeps into Faces on Saturday night, with accompaniment from The Dregs Liquid Light Show.

2/6 – DJ Shadow @ Royale

Legendary producer DJ Shadow returns to town for his first local headlining show in nearly seven years, supporting his new record Action Adventure

2/9 – Jerome’s Dream @ Sonia

Influential screamo veterans Jerome’s Dream team up with the recently-reactivated Sinaloa and modern scene luminaries New Forms and lonelyisaneyesore for a stacked bill at Sonia.

2/10 – Forever Since Heedfest @ Warehouse XI

There’s perhaps no modern discography better suited to the tribute band treatment than Guided By Voices – after all, even at ~50 songs a night, Bob Pollard & co. can barely scratch the surface of the band’s bafflingly prolific catalog. Hence, sometimes you need to gather four groups’ worth of diehard GBV enthusiasts to do that deep-diving instead, which is exactly what this Saturday night bash in Somerville promises.

2/13 – Stander / Genital Shame / Consumer / Minibeast @ O’Brien’s Pub

Chicago post-rockers Stander and Philly black metal experimentalists Genital Shame hit Allston with support from Have a Nice Life offshoot Consumer and ex-Mission of Burma drummer Peter Prescott’s Minibeast for a night of weird and heavy.

2/14 – Squid @ Paradise Rock Club

Celebrate a crank-wave Valentine’s Day as U.K. art-punk crew Squid return to Boston behind last year’s O Monolith, with the great and nigh-unclassifiable Water From Your Eyes in tow.

2/16 – Militarie Gun @ The Sinclair

Melodic L.A. punks Militarie Gun bring their Life Under the Gun tour to Cambridge with an absolutely stacked supporting bill featuring Pool Kids, Spiritual Cramp and Spaced.

2/17 – Dropdead / Escuela Grind @ Sonia

Two semi-local grindcore greats join forces for what’s sure to be a pulverizing Saturday evening in Central Square.

2/20 – Makaya McCraven @ Crystal Ballroom

Modern jazz great Makaya McCraven – a multifaceted drummer/bandleader whose catalog sprawls in directions both traditional and not – makes a stop in Davis Square on his Northeast tour.

2/23 – Author & Punisher @ Sonia

One-man industrial wrecking crew Author & Punisher marks the project’s 20th anniversary with a Winter tour, joined by local doom-sludge masters Morne and Austin’s Glassing.

2/24 – Das Damen @ O’Brien’s Pub

Noisy SST Records garage rockers Das Damen reunited last year for the first time since their early 90s breakup, and following some recent shows supporting Dinosaur Jr., they’ll headline O’Brien’s as the month nears its end.
