Cymbals Eat Guitars played Northeastern University – 3/18

cymbals-1The good folks at Tastemakers Magazine put on another excellent show at Northeastern over the weekend, featuring ambitious Long Island rockers Cymbals Eat Guitars and Brooklyn psychedelic trio Sunflower Bean.

It’d somehow been almost five years since I last saw Cymbals Eat Guitars, when they opened for Bob Mould on the Copper Blue 20th anniversary tour. I was a fan then of the band’s debut, Where There Are Mountains, and its weird, knotty follow-up Lenses Alien, but 2014’s LOSE and 2016’s Pretty Years have won me over even further in the meantime. Their set drew heavily on both of those records, answering their weighty subject matter with dense arrangements, artfully damaged shredding and frontman Joseph D’Agostino’s impassioned vocals.

Sunflower Bean’s sunny psych rock made for a fun opening set, wherein the best moments found the band gliding seamlessly between pop verse-chorus and extended motorik jams.
