The Flaming Lips played House of Blues – 3/3

flaminglips-1Indefatigable fearless freaks The Flaming Lips returned to Boston last Friday for a headlining slot at the House of Blues with LA experimental hip-hop trio Clipping.

I last caught the Lips in the fall of 2013, touring their paranoid fever dream The Terror by way of black confetti and Wayne Coyne preaching from a mountain of mirrors and glowing cables. Things were a little more cheerful this time around. January’s Oczy Mlody aligns more closely with the band’s fun druggy side rather than its dark druggy side, and by extension there was no shortage of rainbow LEDs, fog cannons, giant balloons, and dancers in inflatable suits. Plus, Coyne rode a life-sized neon unicorn through the crowd. And that was all during the first three songs.

I took off after shooting to see Robyn Hitchcock play across town (more on that in a future post), but The Flaming Lips cram more spectacle into 20 minutes than a lot of bands manage in their entire career. Check out photos of the madness below, along with openers Clipping – an odd but effective match – below.
