Perennial played Deep Cuts – 9/19
Mod-punks Perennial played a release-weekend show for their new LP Modernism in Medford with support from Miracle Blood and Sinaloa.
__________
Somehow, despite their being a semi-local concern, I’d only ever seen a single Perennial gig prior to last month. The band opened for K Records legend Calvin Johnston at the Dorchester Art Project eight years back and left an impression that stuck with me all that time, but a combination of scheduling conflicts and bad luck has prevented me from catching them since. I was determined to reverse the curse in September when I saw this stacked lineup for a record-release show, and Perennial came through to prove they’ve lost none of their spark in our time apart.
At once retro and bracingly in-the-moment, the trio’s mod-informed garage/dance/art-punk is delivered in bite-sized, ultra-catchy bursts. Their fourth LP Modernism is a total blast, and they brought it to the Deep Cuts stage (and floor) with a whirlwind blink-and-you’ll-miss-it set that immediately left you wanting more – much like last time. Sincerely I hope it won’t be another eight years.
Opening up the night, Somerville post-hardcore vets Sinaloa brought a more coiled energy (and a couple of new songs!) before local noise-rockers Miracle Blood tore it up, reminding us again (shortly after their ripper Somergloom set) that they’re one of Boston’s must-see live bands at the moment.
