Snapped Ankles played Crystal Ballroom – 3/12
U.K. oddballs Snapped Ankles made their Boston-area debut at the Crystal Ballroom with Toronto’s Gloin and locals Muzzins.
There’s been no shortage of noteworthy post-punk/art-punk bands streaming forth from the United Kingdom the past several years, but Snapped Ankles still manage to stand out among the crowd. The antlers probably help.
The five-piece go all-out on costuming, resembling a band of fantastical woodland creatures and incorporating twigs, leaves and branches into their gear layout. BrooklynVegan’s Bill Pearis described them most accurately as “if Dr Seuss’ The Lorax started a band.” And while that’s a fun aspect of their live show, it’s certainly not an all-spectacle affair. They can really play, and churned out an hour-plus set of eminently danceable jams interspersed with crowd participation at the Ballroom a few Saturdays back.
Well-matched support for the evening came courtesy of Gloin‘s dayglo garage-punk and Boston’s own self-described “furious transcendental flow trio” Muzzins. The whole night was a blast start to finish – scroll below for a gallery of all three acts.
