Free Throw played Brighton Music Hall – 1/13

Nashville emo-punks Free Throw finally made it to Boston on their winter tour alongside openers Camp Trash and Bad Luck.

Free Throw have not had an easy time of it during the post-lockdown concert renaissance, wherein their November date in Allston was waylaid by a COVID case within the band, and one of their planned tourmates (I’ll let you deduce) underwent a messy public disbandment before anything could be rescheduled. Last Thursday though, the stars finally aligned for Boston and the Tennessee fivesome.

I last caught Free Throw headlining at a raucous Great Scott show in 2019, and while last week’s slightly pandemic-subdued evening couldn’t quite measure up to that high-flying affair, it was a fun gig nonetheless. Free Throw’s bummer anthems are meant for the stage, and the band were clearly thrilled to be bringing them there again. The bands who did wind up joining them on the road were strong complements too, with Bad Luck‘s spiky pop-punk nicely contrasting Camp Trash‘s more sweetly melodic, power-pop adjacent emo.
