Future Teens played ONCE Somerville – 8/27

Local bummer-pop favorites Future Teens played a triumphant set at Boynton Yards with support from Shallow Pools and Color Killer.

Every Future Teens show feels like a celebratory affair, even when the content of their songs is largely…not so celebratory, but last Friday’s headliner had to be the most cathartic gig I’ve seen them play yet. Emerging from quarantine with a fanbase more fervent than ever, the foursome brought out an enthusiastic crowd who hung on every note and dished out old favorites alongside tunes from March’s Deliberately Alive EP that had yet to see the stage. The energy on both sides of the stage felt boundless, and high spirits ruled the night.

Fellow local emos Kitner were originally scheduled as direct support for the night, but had to drop off unexpectedly. They’ll be back in action for an October 22nd record release gig that I hope to catch at O’Brien’s. The shimmery indie-pop of Shallow Pools wound up a fitting last-minute fill-in, particularly since I’d missed them at ONCE’s Nice Fest back in July. Rounding out the bill were Color Killer, who are not so much a young band as a band literally made up of children. You might recall them making headlines a few years back for being the youngest-ever band to appear at Warped Tour, a festival the band would somewhat ironically outlive. Color Killer have indeed persisted, honing in on an old-school punk sound and catchy songs about youthful woes. They sounded great and are definitely doing something much cooler with their tween years than running a dorky Simpsons fansite like I did (please don’t look it up).
