Wye Oak played The Sinclair – 3/3

Baltimore duo Wye Oak brought their JOIN tour to Cambridge with support from Chicago’s Ohmme.

Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack formed the shapeshifting project known as Wye Oak nearly 15 years ago, and as their sonic palette has expanded from shoegazing folk to electro-tinged dream pop, watching the pair command an increasingly complex network of sound on stage by themselves has been an impressive spectacle. For this late winter’s JOIN tour, however, the band tried something different. Expanding to a sprawling five-piece let lush layers of keys and horns color the set, and freed Stack from his usual post at the drum kit for a more loose and uninhibited Wye Oak. In keeping with that spirit, the night’s lengthy setlist expanded beyond the band’s official catalog to Wasner’s Flock of Dimes and Stack’s Joyero solo projects – plus their sweeping cover of “Strangers.”

Chicago duo Ohmme – who announced a new record out in June the morning after the show – previewed some unreleased music, covered Kate Bush and otherwise charmed the early-arriving crowd.
