Boston Calling 2019 – Sunday
Boston Calling’s 2019 edition wrapped up with Travis Scott, Brandi Carlile, Marina, Snail Mail and more.
BC’s Sunday closers tend to be the weekend’s biggest draw each year, and for 2019, ascendant superstar Travis Scott was no exception. In a welcome contrast to the noxious macho energy of last year’s Eminem set or self-absorbed ultra-seriousness of Tool in 2017, Scott actually put on a set I wanted to see. The Houston rapper’s Technicolor hedonism was a sensory overload even without the roller coaster, and “Sicko Mode” stood transcendent even without Drake.
Elsewhere in the day, Brandi Carlile played a passionate set to a small but massively grateful crowd to close out the corner Blue Stage, while Marina put on an expertly choreographed pop showcase, L.A. collective SOB X RBE delivered one of the weekend’s standout hip-hop sets and Australian jangle-rockers Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever proved their mettle as a perfect band for beers in the afternoon sunshine (which is not to undersell how very good they are in every other context too).
