Marissa Nadler played Great Scott – 12/8
Massachusetts’ own Marissa Nadler headlined a Saturday evening at Great Scott, joined by fellow singer/songwriter Johanna Warren.
Despite her local base of operation, I’d somehow never managed to see Marissa Nadler play prior to this month. But what better circumstance than a chilly, melancholic December evening to finally rectify that? Supporting her latest – September’s For My Crimes – Nadler’s dreamy, gothic folk sounded soothing and otherworldly alongside a second guitarist (who, impressively, also conjured bass lines via foot pedals).
Hailing from Portland, OR, with earthy, intimate songs in tow, Johanna Warren was an ideally complementary opener whose short set was highlighted by haunting a capella bookends.
