Mutual Benefit played Great Scott – 12/5

Jordan Lee’s Mutual Benefit headlined the first night of Allston Pudding’s December residency at Great Scott with GABI and Loone. 

It’s been five years since Mutual Benefit released their breakthrough Love’s Crushing Diamond LP, and while the band has flown a bit under the radar since then, they have kept busy. A check-in with September’s Thunder Follows the Light finds the gentle, dreamy folk of Lee and a rotating cast of bandmates sounding enchanting as ever.

On a chilly December night, Mutual Benefit’s current four-piece lineup closed out the first of three year-end shows put together by venerable local music blog Allston Pudding. This week’s show (12/13) will be highlighted by Oompa, Jelani Sei and Honey Cutt, while Ovlov, Anna Altman, Mister Goblin and Alexander will close things out on the 20th.

Rounding out Wednesday night’s bill was GABI‘s striking, operatic electro-pop deconstructions and a haunting set by Western Massachusetts post-folk-rock collective Loone.
