Frankie Cosmos played afterHours at Northeastern University – 1/26

frankiecosmos-1Singer/songwriter Greta Kline, better known as Frankie Cosmos, rounded out a remarkably strong week at my alma mater’s Starbucks performance space last Thursday with Western Mass. upstarts And The Kids.

It’s been a few years since I’ve seen Frankie Cosmos, and in both of my prior experiences, Kline and her band were serving as openers. In the meantime, and since the release of 2016’s lauded Next Thing, her stage presence and overall performance chops have confidently improved. The project’s profile rose on the strength of Kline’s lyrics and unfussy songwriting, and the live show lives up to expectations with well-executed full band versions of those tunes (old and new).

Northampton’s buzzed-about And The Kids also impressed with their palette of post-punk-y indie rock wrapped in off-kilter melodies. At times they sounded like a more hooky and less overtly mysterious Warpaint, which is definitely a good thing.
