Thalia Zedek Band played Midway Cafe – 9/21

Thalia Zedek Band played a hometown record release show joined by Helen Money and Sleepyhead at the Midway last month.

New work from Boston mainstay Thalia Zedek is always cause for intrigue, and last month’s LP Fighting Season is no exception. Following the May release of Negative Work with her experimental post-punk trio E, Zedek’s new solo record swings back toward singer-songwriter mode as only she can interpret it. Joined by a retuned version of her longtime backing band – now featuring E’s Gavin McCarthy on drums – Zedek played plenty of those new songs for an appreciative Friday night crowd at JP’s cozy Midway. Sleepyhead – long-running indie rockers with a deep well of charming tunes – and solo avant-chamber cellist Helen Money rounded out an eclectic night (which began on an extra-eclectic note when I arrived early enough to accidentally catch the end of the Midway’s resident Grateful Dead tribute band…)
