The Growlers played Royale – 9/19
Pioneers of the “beach goth” aesthetic – and its namesake festival – The Growlers brought their breezy garage psychedelia to the East Coast in support of the just-released Casual Acquaintances. The six-piece greeted its fervent fans with some truly outstanding inverted cross jumpsuits and printed setlists that looked imposingly long even at a glance – not that anyone minded. Theirs is undoubtedly a cult following, and the crowd’s zealousness sometimes belied the melodic afternoon-buzz of the band’s sound and stage presence.
So laid-back and unassuming were The Growlers, in fact, that openers Surfbort threatened to upstage them with a set of pure and chaotic punk rock led by magnetic singer Dani Miller.
